Notes about the Liturgy of the Hours for Pentecost: Evening Prayer I

LITURGY OF THE HOURS, THE SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOST

First Evening Prayer

The Hymn is Veni, Creator Spiritus.

The Psalms and antiphons are proper to this feast.

1. Psalm 113, with

On the day of Pentecost

they had all gathered together in one place, alleluia.

2. Psalm 147:1-11, with

Tongues as of fire appeared before the apostles,

and the Holy Spirit came upon each of them, alleluia.

3. Revelations Canticle (15:3-4), with

The Spirit who comes from the Father will glorify me, alleluia.

The Reading is Romans 8:9-11, which connects the events of Pentecost with the life of each of the baptized: “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, then he who raised Jesus from the dead will give life to your own mortal bodies through his Spirit living in you.”

The Responsory is: “The Holy Spirit is the Paraclete, alleluia, alleluia,” with the verse, “He will teach you all things, alleluia, alleluia!”

The antiphon on the Magnificat is:

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of all believers

and set them on fire with your love.

Though they spoke many different languages,

you united the nations in professing the same faith, alleluia.

The Intercessions and the Prayer are proper to Pentecost.

The double alleluias are added to the dismissal at this service.
